About Portugal

Portugal has become one of Europe’s most established destinations for digital nomads, combining a mild climate, attractive lifestyle, good infrastructure and relatively easy access to the rest of Europe. Lisbon and the Algarve remain the best-known hubs, while destinations such as Madeira, the Porto and smaller coastal towns offer alternatives for nomads seeking a slower pace. The country has a strong international community, widespread English usage and an expanding network of coworking spaces, cafés and coliving options. Reliable internet is generally available in major cities and tourist destinations, making Portugal well suited to remote workers. Portugal also offers several visa and residency pathways relevant to remote workers, including the Digital Nomad Visa, which allows eligible non-EU citizens to live and work remotely from the country subject to income and other requirements. Costs vary considerably by location. Lisbon and popular coastal areas can be expensive, particularly for accommodation, while smaller cities and inland destinations can provide significantly better value. For digital nomads, Portugal’s main attractions are its combination of lifestyle, connectivity, international community and geographic accessibility. Its popularity does mean that housing costs and tourist demand can be challenging, but outside the most expensive locations, Portugal still offers compelling options for longer stays.
